Three new reports point the way on the best new Energy resources in the UK.

Wind Power, even at very high penetrations in the supply could be more reliable than any other generation :-

wind power is, of course, clean energy. but it is only practical for small projects/towns. The construction of micro hydropower production plants is quite environment friendly.  Another renewable and available source of electricity is geothermal energy. These are clean energy sources. No fuel is needed and they can operate for many years, only requiring regular maintenance, and unlike wind or solar, technology available enables generation of vast power, in the range of hundreds of megawatts per plant. This is the way to go if we are to deal with pollution effectively without compromising our way of life.

Why do you think that "wind power is, of course, clean energy. but it is only practical for small projects/towns." ?  Doesn't that depend on which country you are talking about? Wind is the central part of the UK's renewable energy strategy.  Also to achieve 80%+ carbon reductions, we will have to change our way of life but that does not mean a lower quality of life.
