The Conservatives are to ditch their opposition to the London Congestion Charge as part of their policy review headed by John Redwood, according to today's Evening Standard. David Cameron "is keen on road pricing as a means of tackling car emissions" and wants London policy to lead the way. However, "they still plan to change key elements of the scheme, such as its hours of operation and exemptions. They will also oppose the westward extension of the charge to Kensington". Conservative shadow transport secretary Chris Grayling said the existing London technological system "is much more likely to be the model for future schemes than the Government's 'spy in the sky' proposed system of road pricing for the future," although "it will be up to local politicians not national politicians to decide what is best for their city." |
