Publicity for Nov 4th

After exchanging emails with jo, it seems appropriate open a new topic on this popular and often controversial subject. Please treat this is a brainstorming area.

many sectors - many viewpoints - many purposes

i think that publicity for 4th november REMEMBER REMEMBER THE FOURTH OF NOVEMBER should not be tied to one form of advertising, or one particular message. the point for me is that by calling 4th november as the climate march day we will be attracting people from many sectors of the population, each with their own viewpoints and each with their own purposes in attending the march(es). i think therefore that we should create a press release suitable to the political thinking of each sector who are likely to want to attend, and publicise this way, rather than struggle to find one unifying message and theme to draw everyone in. if we have one message, we will have conflictual debate and we will be dismissed by some key people in other sectors than our own. if we emphasise the rainbow nature of the climate march(es) we stand a better chance of creating a critical mass.

different messages

Jo, I don't think the messsage influences how we tackle publicity. We have to reach those people that have never been on a demo before. The current leaflet says 'let world leaders know that we need urgent action on climate change' which is good for me.

it's cool to go

hi john, it's cool to go. i think that if we can stick to open, clear messages such as "let world leaders know that we need urgent action on climate change'" we can reach the most people. there are still a lot of "switch-offs" operating when people read strong political statements and find it conflicts with their "daily-mail-enhanced" viewpoints on environmentalism. i know we can reach people who have never been on a demonstration before without having to do battle with demonology. you're on the money as always, mate. jo.

leaflet design

Leaflets are very difficult for us to get right. We all know what we don't like but we cannot necessarily agree about what we all like. Can we gather some consensus? Here are my big issues.

-The title has to be very large so it can be seen at a distance. Many people (especially environmentalists) will not accept leaflets from us at tube stations from us unless they know what they are about; I certainly don't ! On some Stop The War leaflets, the title fills half the page.

-The title of the event and the important text must be in very sharp contrast to the background. That normally means black ink on white paper.

-Our own identity, Campaign against Climate Change and our logo should be clearly visible.

-The Nov 4th leaflet must have a clear, large Stop Climate Chaos logo. Friends of the Earth groups and others are less likely to push them if the association is unclear. It would be great to have the logos of the SCC organisations somewhere on the leaflet, probably only realistic if it is two sided.

In the absence of any house style, the leaflet should have some style; there should be limited use of different fonts and weights.

Minor information such as the web site address, 'printed on recycled paper' need not be placed in bold or emphasised.

Visually stunning leaflets and postcards are hard to design but easier to distribute. The Climate Camp postcards are really stunning but they are multi colour and two sided.

multimedia

Some ideas I have had for this are:

- BP ran an advert in the US and the UK with entirely different sound tracks, the US version stressed oil exploration, the UK version stressed climate change. Perhaps we can do a third version?

- I played with some yellow triangular cards with Dec 3rd painted on them last year but only in the last week before the demo. What about creating a wall of images (perhaps to put on the globalclimatecampaign web site) of people in different countries holding up similar Nov 4th cards in different identifiable places in the world e.g. London - inside a podule on the London Eye.

penny for the guy

hi john, to add to these excellent ideas of yours :-

*** remember, remember the 4th of november
images of a guy (choose your own traitor) burning on the bonfire - ask for a penny for the guy - this will only work in the uk...

*** virus e-mail publicity - how about guerilla tree-planting as carbon offsetting...you'd need to plant a lot of trees to offset the carbon emissions of london for example - did anyone see the tetrapak (i think it was) ad from a few years back with trees growing everywhere - through the pavements and train stations ?
