This Autumn is an exciting time for climate activists in the UK. The 4th of November look set to be the biggest climate demonstration the UK has ever seen and in September/October activists have real chance to get a new law which would make the UK the first country in the world to set a legally binding Carbon budget. This would set a cap on emissions and a pathway of annual reduction targets. The new law is the Climate Change Bill, which Friends of the Earth have been campaiging for over the last year. But to get it through Friends of the Earth (FoE)
NEED YOUR HELP
. You may have already filled in a red postcard asking your MP to back the Climate Change Bill. But for the next stage of The Big Ask campaign Friends of the Earth is calling on climate activists to visit their MP in person. The campaign has been so successful to date that FoE are now aiming to get the Bill passed in the next parliamentary session - by persuading the government to write a commitment to it into the Queen’s Speech
(that’s in November when the Queen reads the Government’s to-do list for the coming year).
In order to do this, Friends of the Earth need to create a groundswell of opinion in favour of a Bill, especially among MPs. To make this happen Friends of the Earth want to ensure that all 646 MPs are visited by people in their constituencies between the 12th September and 11th October and spoken to about the Climate Change Bill. Friends of the Earth are calling this The Big Ask Big Month Big Lobby The environmental group would like MPs to commit to asking David Miliband (Environment Secretary) and Tony Blair to include a Bill in the Queen’s Speech. To coordinate efforts it has created a
message board
whereby activists can exchange tips, network and arrange to visit MPs together.
If you can pledge to lobby your MP during The Big Ask Big Month Big Lobby please fill in the
online pledge form here
and then join the message board to hook up with other local activists. Remember
YOU DON'T HAVE TO COME TO LONDON TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS LOBBY
. We want activists to visit MP surgeries in their own constituencies.
You can find the contact details for your MP here.
So pleased get involved and
pledge to visit your MP
before the 4th November. Nick Davies Friends of the Earth
