Alan Simpson, MP for Nottingham South, has declared an intention to stand down as a Labour MP at the next election - BBC News. Does anyone agree with petitioning him to stand as an independent 'anti-greenwash' candidate? This is, after all, someone who practises what he preaches. "In a letter to his constituency party members, the MP said a Gordon Brown-led premiership would be even worse. "Mr Simpson, 58 and first elected for Nottingham South in 1992, said there were "not enough" good Labour MPs. "He said he would be more effective campaigning for radical environmental change outside parliament, rather than remaining on the back benches." He had a comfortable lead at the last election. |

No benefit in running as independent
He's giving the same reasons as Colin Challen. But keep in mind that M.P.s, once they have done about 10 years in Parliament, get a full and generous pension! There's no real reason to run as an Independent. Given his views, he should run as a Green. It's all risky, some Labour voters are still going to vote Labour irrespective of the candidate.
Leaving us just when we needed them most
I'd say his views are a good reason for both the Lib Dems and Greens to agree not to contest his seat once it were confirmed he was running as an independent, rather like when Martin Bell ran as 'anti-sleaze' candidate against Neil Hamilton. Maybe the Greens would take him as a candidate as they didn't field one last time, but then he would be guaranteed to face contenders from all 3 main parties.
I can see why some Labour MPs are so frustrated, but would they only wait until Gordon Brown has actually been made leader before quitting.
They can see the writing
They can see Brown's writing on the wall... there is nothing to wait for.
