As far as Bristol is concerned I think the response and level of interest is nothing short of phenomenal. Here is a summary of what’s been achieved over the last few weeks it never ceases to amaze me how quickly these things snowball, so well done everybody……you know who you are.
We came from nothing, 6 people sat around a pub table from different organisations wondering how to get this together. Our priorities were to get a meeting date organised and book a coach. The latter was achieved very quickly and was made possible by financial contributions from the following organisations, in no particular order
• Bristol NUT
• Bristol Green Party
• Bristol Respect
• Bristol Foe
The launch meeting was one of the most positive, holistic and inspiring that it has ever been my pleasure to attend. Every single speaker said their piece and said it well. Which combined with a vibrant forum afterwards ended in 27 tickets being sold from a turnout of 65 people is really quite amazing.
Taking a quick jump to December first, I Thought we were doing well with one fifty seven seater coach filled and a minibus on stand by, it was apparent that by Thursday afternoon this was not enough. Another coach was booked on the proviso that we pay for it before departure, so thank you to everybody that called me for turning up.
So because everybody worked together approximately 90 people came up to the demonstration in London. Which I think exceeded all expectations in itself. At the organising meeting, the optimistic appraisal was that 5,000 people would attend, the actual figure was at least double that and very probably nearer 20,000. Wow!
One of the many reasons is that, people have realised that our catastrophic endeavours in the Middle East, Central Asia, and West Africa and indeed in that other forgotten oil based conflict in the former Yugoslavia would not be necessary if we had a renewable portfolio. The reasons why we don’t can be evaluated later
People have also realised that nuclear power is not the answer, for exactly the same reasons that fossil fuels are not the answer. As far as nuclear is concerned we have been here before, so lets not do it again.
In conclusion I am proposing the formation of A Bristol campaign against climate change group with its initial focus being “Nuclear and why it’s not the answerâ€. With the response that I have witnessed, Bristol and indeed the South West in general should play a pivotal role in dumping the fossil fuel nuclear plutocracy and replacing it with the green, peaceful and co-operative renewable alternative.
Well thats what i think!
