Ashok Sinha, the Director of Stop Climate Chaos gave an initial presentation outlining the Vision and Mission of Stop Climate Chaos, and explained a very basic diagram about the key obligations the United Kingdom faces as regards Climate Change, both at home and internationally.

He explained that the coalition is only just out of infancy and is expected to mature over the course of around 5 years and be able to achieve real results.

We were encouraged to think about promoting the Stop Climate Chaos brand to the core membership of our organisations as a way to start the ball rolling.

Lucy Pearce of Stop Climate Chaos and Joanna Watson of Friends of the Earth described what the core Events Group had come up with for the first major event for SCC : "Carbon Dating" on 1st March 2006.

The basic format of this London event will be asking MP's to come from the Houses of Parliament over to Methodist Central Hall to meet small tables of coalition representatives to answer questions about their commitment to the key objective - putting in place a Carbon Budget for the UK.

There were lots of details given of how the event will proceed, suffice it to say that people who wish to take part in the Carbon Dating event should register their interest with Stop Climate Chaos as soon as possible, as there are limits to how many people can come from each member organisation.

SCC IS PROVIDING A MINIMUM 10 PLACES PER MEMBER ORGANISATION AS WE ARE KEEN TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERY MEMBER ORGANISATION IS INVOVLED AND REPRESENTED ON THE DAY. THE TOTAL LIMIT IS 700, SO IF YOU CAN RECRUIT MORE THAN 10 THEN GREAT, ALTHOUGH WE WILL NEED TO KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON NUMBERS. PEOPLE MUST REGISTER TO ATTEND AND CAN'T TURN UP WITHOUT
BOOKING.

If people WANT TO BE PART OF THE EVENT THEY CAN BOOK VIA THE FLYER :-

If other people would like to help with the event in a voluntary service capacity, there will be a need to have 90 or more to act as ushers, stewards and facilitators and general gophers.

GOOD TO FLAG UP NEED FOR VOLUNTEERS BUT INSTEAD OF GETTING PEOPLE TO EMAIL US, PLEASE WAIT FOR AN EMAIL FROM US OUTLINING HOW MANY VOLUNTEERS WE NEED AND WHO IS COORDINATING VOUNTEERS (IT MAY BE ONE OF THE MEMBER ORGANISATIONS. THERE WILL BE A STEWARDS BRIEFING ON THE DAY)

Those people who take part in the actual "dating" part of the event will be given resources to help them prepare for what to discuss - and the first part of the event will offer inspirational speakers and guidance before the "dating" of MP's begins.

Of special note, Stop Climate Chaos would like to invite every member/affiliate to bring a banner depicting the logo of their organisation - Lucy will be letting us know what size and format these should be.

Also, if anyone has any ideas for unusual inspirational speakers, please let Lucy know.

Of course, if anyone has a MP contact or even a Lord in their address book, please let the secretariat of Stop Climate Chaos know, as this will be useful for doing the invitations of MP' s to the event.

"Daters" will be limited to around 700 in number, carefully balanced from the people who register. The number of MP's coming to the event should be around 100.

Before and after the briefing about 1st March we had networking time with all the other people, and we also had breakout workshops to look at the following 3 issues :-

The November Event
Communications
The Pledge (coming to the website soon)

I am listing only the most important points below : as a summary should come from the Office of SCC later :-

IMPORTANT : NOVEMBER 11 SEEMS LIKELY TO BECOME NOVEMBER 4.
There is still some discussion about whether the international events on Climate Change will all be on the same day in November. It seems likely that all the events in the UK will be on 4th November 2006, and that 11th November 2006 will be used for events in Africa, in particular for Nairobi where the Kyoto MOP2 Conference will be halfway through.

THE INTERNAL COMMUICATIONS GROUP HAVE EXPLORED FREQUENCY OF MAILINGS,
QUARTERLY MEETINGS...

The website is a tool that we can all use : send your reports and event listings to Lucy. Please DO NOT send your submissions to Beth, the new Communications Manager for Stop Climate Chaos (her second day on the job was today) - who has come from working with, amongst other things, MakePovertyHistory.

Lucy's e-mail is lucy a-t stopclimatechaos.org

I communicated to Stop Climate Chaos that Operation Noah are committed to producing a team for the 1st March 2006 "Carbon Dating" event.

In the main group discussion, a member of Tearfund mentioned some very interesting public names who had been invited to both the March event and the November event. I have given my contact details to the relevant person in Tearfund in order to start the discussion about "big name speakers" that Operation Noah asked me to raise : and I will follow this up to see if we can work together with Tearfund on this.

On another of Operation Noah's points, sadly I was not able to introduce the idea of the year 2012 being emblematic both for the Son-of-Kyoto-Protocol and the London Olympics : this is something we will have to bring to SCC another time.

I met a young woman from the Baptist Missionary Society who was very encouraged to hear more about Operation Noah, and I will be hoping to have further opportunities to share with her about what Churches Together are up to in connection with Christian Ecology Link and Operation Noah.

I had a couple of conversations with people about the Faiths Group that emerged in the Campaign against Climate Change, and the lead that Christian Ecology Link took in setting up Prayers for the Planet on 3 December 2005, and there is quite some interest about that : clearly something else to follow up.

Of other interest : at the SCC meeting today there was mention of close talks with both Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, and also the SCC will conduct a major meeting tomorrow of the "Parliamentary Group" to look at how best to communicate with the Government.
