Critical Mass last night was a great celebration of cycling. Between 1000 and 1100 turned up,many for the first time. Weather hot, police were cool. Rumour had it that police had earlier told BBC they had decided against action against the ride. James, Paula, and myself handed out about 600 Bike Ride fliers before the ride got going (and unknown number of the main blue fliers.) The ride progressed slowly to the Strand ,Trafalgar sq, Mall, for a stop at Buck Pal,then down to Parl Sq for a long stop outside Parl with microphone comment to effect that "Give out a letter threatening the mass & you get 1000 cyclists stationary outside the House of C". Then down to 10, Downing, back to T Square, up Char Cr Rd to Oxford St,up to Ox Circus, onlookers getting more excited as the evening got later, back past Eros and finishing in T Sq at 1025pm.From 8.30 onwards we had been giving out (on the pedal)the blue CACC flier to the onlookers(300 guesstimate). This was the biggest ever Critical Mass between Oct and April that i am aware of. Plenty of cyclists were saying they would be bringing their friends next month,so perhaps the police letter will eventually inspire .. a Critical Mass.
