Cap and Dividend versus grandfathering - why we need a campaign in Europe
I'm puzzled that there hasn't been more objection to the EC's plans to give away ("grandfather") carbon emission permits to existing polluters (mainly coal-fired power generators). Apart from a WWF-commissioned report in April which pointed out that this will be a 60 billion euro windfall to the polluters, I can't find any sign that European environmentalists realise how much of a scandal this is.

The One Tonners
Hello fellow climate campaigners - just thought I would post a piece about 'The One Tonners' and my new blog, to be found at: http://theonetonners.blogspot.com.
The 'One Tonners' bit refers to George Monbiot's recent workings out where in order for us to all have a fair share of the atmosphere we in the over-developed countries need to reduce our emissions to One Tonne of CO2 a year (90% of current 10 tonnes a year of CO2 in the UK). George says we need to do this by 2030 but I say we can reduce by 80% NOW! Why wait? Anyhow any tips for helping the people of Gloucestershire to become One Tonners will be gratefully received. It would be great if other counties could take this up too - I am going to show videos by DJs etc. (that remake of 'Brick in the Wall' one is especially good) and hope to create a feeling that it is 'cool to be low carbon' - maybe that may get through to some younger people that way? Again any tips gratefully received. Cheers, Cathy.
Carbon Rationing and Contraction and Convergence Petition to Blair
To let you all know. I have started an e-petition to Tony Blair.
The petition calls for international adoption of Contraction and Convergence, and the adoption of Carbon Rationing to ensure we hit our UK targets. You can add you names at the link below:
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Carbon-Rationing/
The aim is to keep pushing this petition over the coming year, try and get some momentum going, so by next year's climate talks we have a significant petition to put before Gordon Brown or Tony Blair or whoever is PM at the time.
Miliband makes an impressive start
David Miliband is making an impressive start as environment secretary. He's already looking at domestic carbon rationing: Swipe-card plan to ration consumers' carbon use
A few days ago Milliband asked officials to look more closely at providing financial incentives to encourage householders to recycle most of their waste.
It looks as if Miliband is a man with a mission. Who knows what Margaret Beckett's mission was but I have heard she was good on at the international level. I'll have to take their word for that.
BMJ tackles Carbon Rationing
There is an interesting article by the editor of the BMJ here. One of the respondents asks whether we can reach a foot print of 1 tonne. Comments from patients are accepted.
The Africa Group & Contraction & Convergence
Hi Folks
Further update on Contraction & Convergence and its recent progress.
Please email the information to any others that you feel will be interested and in a position to show support.
Many thanks
